Should
Wenn das Hilfsverb should verwendet wird, kann es einen Ratschlag oder Vorschlag ausdrücken:
You should talk to him. Du solltest mit ihm sprechen.
The employees shouldn't behave like this. Die Angestellten sollten sich nicht so verhalten.
Should I bring something to eat? Soll ich etwas zu essen mitbringen?
Should drückt manchmal auch eine Wahrscheinlichkeit aus:
Horatio should be in his lab right now. Horatio müsste gerade in seinem Labor sein.

Should kann eine Verpflichtung ausdrücken, aber es ist nicht so stark wie have to und must:

Für eine vergangene Handlung: should + 'have' + Vergangenheitspartizip:
Kalvin Krime should have hired Horatio while he was available. Kalvin Krime hätte Horatio einstellen sollen, als er zur Verfügung stand.
Mit should like to kann man einen Wunsch auf höfliche bzw. gewählte Weise ausdrücken. Allerdings wird would in der Umgangssprache häufiger verwendet.
I should like to visit Uganda one day. Ich wünsche mir, eines Tages nach Uganda zu reisen.
Anmerkung: Das Hilfsverb ought to ist ein Synonym von should:
I ought to go = I should go. Ich sollte gehen.

would: 'Would be more careful' has no place in this sentence. 'Would' is used to form the conditional tense or to indicate habitual actions in the past. Using 'would' here is grammatically incorrect.
had: The auxiliary 'had' must be followed by the past participle of a verb when used to form a perfect tense. We might say 'Horatio had been careful in the past.'

should: 'Should' expresses the strong suggestion or advice. This sentence expresses a regret that Kevin didn't buy more bio-tech stocks when he had the opportunity.

When reporting this past thought, this statement becomes: Polly and Philip thought that they would never find the test monkey again.
should: 'Should' expresses a strong suggestion or advice. It does not make sense to use it in this sentence.
