When referring to a country where we are, or where we’re going to, we use the following prepositions:

| ♀ (ending in e) | je suis... I am (in)... je vais... I’m going (to)... etc. en France France Corse Corsica Suisse Switzerland Algérie Algeria |
| ♂ | j’habite... I live (in)... je reste... I’m staying (in)... etc. au Sénégal Senegal Canada Canada Maroc Morocco |
| ♂ + vowel | je pars... I’m leaving (for)... je voyage... I’m travelling (to)... (...) en Iran Iran Irak Iraq Islande Iceland |
| ♀♀ ♂♂ | je suis allé... I went (to)... j’ai été... I was (in)... (...) aux États-Unis the United States Pays-Bas the Netherlands Canaries the Canary Islands |
Note: with towns and islands we generally use the preposition à (for plural island names we use aux).
J’habite en Allemagne, à Berlin. I live in Germany, in Berlin.
Victor voudrait partir aux États-Unis, à New-York. Victor would like to go to the United States, to New York.
Je suis allé à Cuba. I went to Cuba.
