- "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a high-stress job, must be suffering negative health consequences."
- "Although most people do in fact accept dinosaurs as a real, though extinct species, there are some religious fundamentalists out there who refuse to acknowledge the existence of these fantastic lizards."
Exercise 1
OILS is .
OILS is an independent organization which acknowledges companies using legal labor practices.
an independent organization which acknowledges companies using legal labor practices: OILS "lists and labels subcontracting companies which meet all international human rights and labor standards". This means that the organization certifies and provides an index of companies which use legal and ethical labor practices.
an independent subcontractor which employs underage workers: This is incorrect. OILS is not a subcontractor, nor does the organization employ underage (young) workers. It is just this kind of thing that OILS is opposed to.
a group of independent manufacturers promoting unethical labor practices: OILS is not a group of manufacturers, but an organization which promotes ethical labor practices.
an international gasoline conglomerate: Despite its name, OILS has nothing to do with gasoline, oil or petroleum. OILS is an acronym for "Organization for International Labor Standards"

Hmmm...this statement is false. Brent tells us that there are some "religious fundamentalists who refuse to acknowledge the existence of these lizards". In this sentence, "lizards" refers to dinosaurs, however. Furthermore, Brent and Moira are discussing a small group of religious fundamentalists, and not the Catholic church (insert your own joke here).
This is a true statement. Brent asks the question "haven't these people seen Jurassic Park?" and then states "take one look at the Tyrannosaur and tell me that dinosaurs don't exist". His statement indicates that the film "Jurassic Park" supports the argument that dinosaurs are real. Although Moira tells Brent that the film Jurassic park was "adapted from a science fiction novel" and is not a good argument that dinosaurs existed, Brent ignores her and simply says, "it IS a good argument".
This is a true statement. Brent says that there are some "religious fundamentalists" who refuse to "acknowledge the existence" of dinosaurs. To "acknowledge" means to admit or accept something. Example: She refused to acknowledge that her son had stolen the money.
This statement is false. Moira tells us that "fossil evidence has confirmed the existence of dinosaurs". She goes on to say that "carbon dating gives us a precise idea" of when dinosaurs existed. Carbon dating is a method of determining the age of something that was once living by measuring the amount of carbon that it contains. Note that contrary to what Moira says, this method cannot be applied to dinosaurs, because they existed too long ago (several millions of years).
