Brent and Moira compare nutrition and health in different countries in their report.

From the list below, select the TRUE statements according to this broadcast.

There may be more than one correct answer!
This is a true statement. Moira says that the "French tend to have an extremely low rate of heart disease". This means that the number of French people that suffer from heart disease is relatively small. Moira then says that this number is "much lower than the United States". The expression "tend to" indicates a tendency or general rule.
There is nothing said in this broadcast stating that drinking wine for breakfast helps one exercise.
This statement is false. Moira says that doctors believe that drinking red wine in moderation "prevents cancer, heart disease and other ailments". To prevent something means to stop it from happening, which is different from "to cure" which describes complete recovery or recuperation. Doctors don't believe that red wine can "cure" cancer and other illnesses, but that it can prevent them (when consumed regularly in moderation).
Brent reports that "nutritionists have wondered for years how the French manage to stay healthy despite the richness of their diet. To "wonder about (their good health)" is to speculate about it (and implies that it isn't fully understood). Moira then states that the French diet is a 'paradox", which also indicates that this phenomenon is not fully understood. Moira is explaining that the French diet is a mystery, or something which isn't fully understood by many health experts.
Exercise 2
In the encyclopedia definition above, we read that "some people have reported a recovery" from Anosmia.

Choose the sentence from the list below which is closest in meaning to this phrase.

In the encyclopedia definition above, we read that "some people have reported a recovery" from Anosmia.

Choose the sentence from the list below which is closest in meaning to this phrase.
This is incorrect. "To report a recovery" does not indicate that a group has "discovered a cure" for Anosmia.
In this context, the verb "to recover" expresses the act of "getting well" or "becoming healthy" such as after a disease or illness. For example: He took 3 weeks to recover after he got malaria. If some people have reported a recovery from Anosmia, then they have gotten well, or become healthy again after having it.
Hmmm. An interesting theory, but unfortunately this is incorrect. Maybe some day diseases will come from outer space, but until then we will just have to be patient.
Exercise 3
Which of the following statements is most accurate?

Which of the following statements is most accurate?
The letter states that the money will be given to research projects "seeking" the cure for Anosmia. This is different than people who suffer from Anosmia.
The letter states that Bruno Delavigne has "revolutionized" the perfume industry, which has nothing to do with "revolutionaries", who like causing or are engaged in political revolution. Example: Terry Bear is a dangerous revolutionary who should be guillotined.
The letter states that the Nose Committee appreciates Bruno's contributions to the fragrance industry, but this choice is not an appropriate answer to the question above.
The letter states that the money raised at the banquet will be "donated to charities ...and to research projects".
Exercise 4
What is being advertised in this audio?

What is being advertised in this audio?
"Marriage therapy" is a service designed to help with troubled marriages. Although the announcer does say that the Supertrowel "saved (his) marriage", this advertisement is for a garden tool called the "Supertrowel".
A "trowel" is a small implement with a pointed blade used for digging into the earth, usually for gardening purposes. A garden "tool" is an "instrument" or "implement" used for working in the garden. The advert is for a "trowel" which is a garden "tool".
A "cure" is a "remedy" or "treatment" for a problem, generally a health problem. Example: Doctors haven't yet found a cure for cancer. Although the announcer mentions "back aches" and a "stiff neck" at the beginning of the advert, the advert is actually about a garden tool that makes gardening easier on your back and neck.
A towel is used for drying one's body. This advertisement is for a "trowel" which is a small shovel: a tool to dig up plants, weeds and flowers.
Exercise 5
The journalist uses 191 words in his article... Let's summarise the main message of the article in just one line!

The journalist uses 191 words in his article... Let's summarise the main message of the article in just one line!
This is the line which provides the best synopsis of the article! We read that "A team of French scientists is claiming a major breakthrough in the fight against the avian influenza virus (or "bird flu")". Later, the journalist writes that the development is a scarf which "would protect the birds by preventing them from breathing in infected air particles".
This is not the best choice to summarise the article. The common cold is technically "acute viral rhinopharyngitis" or "acute coryza", and there is still no cure for it! If you have a common cold, you sneeze and cough a lot! In the article, we read that the French protect themselves from this annoying virus by wearing scarves in winter.
This is not the best choice to summarise the article. We read that there is a "threat of a global flu pandemic", which is why the French researchers have developed the "anti bird flu scarf". A "threat" is something bad which may happen in the future: it has not yet happened.
