Definition
the emergency room or ER (US): the part of a hospital where you go for urgent treatment
In British English, the "ER" is called either "the casualty department" (or simply "casualty") OR "Accident and Emergency" (A&E).
Examples
- "My wife Sophie is going to be at the ER all day, and I can't find anyone else to take him."
- "Er, no."
- "Edward : Er... what?"
- "My name is Dr. Robert Loblaw and I am the on-call physician at the emergency room at Mt."
- "Things were slow in the E.R. today."
Exercise 1
Judging by the content of her email, which of the following jobs is Sophie most likely to have?
Judging by the content of her email, which of the following jobs is Sophie most likely to have?
There is nothing in this email which suggests that Sophie is an elevator repairperson, or that she fixes lifts or elevators.
There is no reason to assume that Sophie is someone who cooks pizza for a living. If she were, then she probably wouldn't tell Bob that he could buy pizzas for their dinner!
This is the best choice here. Sophie talks about working in the Emergency Room, so we know that she must be working in a hospital, and is probably a "doctor" or a "nurse". Doctors and nurses are medical professionals who treat you when you are ill or have an accident.
There is nothing in this email which suggests that Sophie is a mechanic or technician.
