Definition

a lawyer: a legal representative, a solicitor, an attorney, etc. noun
A "lawyer" is sometimes referred to as an "attorney" in the USA. In Britain, we talk of "solicitors" and "barristers".
As your lawyer, I advise you to plead "insanity".

UK: I am a lawyer. I practise law.
US: I too am a lawyer, but I am also called an attorney.

This term is used in the UK to describe this same profession (a person who represents the legal interests of clients): "Hannah is a solicitor 2". Hint: this term begins with an "s", and has 9 letters.

This term is used in the US, and is synonymous with both terms above: "Chuck is an attorney 3". Hint: this term begins with an "a", and has 8 letters.
1 lawyer: This is the correct answer. Bethany says "I'm a lawyer yes" in response to Philip's question "You're a lawyer, right?". Lawyers represent clients in court, as well as providing them with legal advice.
2 solicitor: This is correct. "Solicitors" represent clients in court, as well as providing them with legal advice. Note that this term is very common in the UK, but is not used in the US.
3 attorney: This is correct. "Attorneys" represent clients in court, as well as providing them with legal advice. Note that this term is very common in the US, but is not used in the UK.
Exercise 2
Select the TRUE statements about Philip Cheeter based on the audio you heard. There may be more than one correct answer!

Select the TRUE statements about Philip Cheeter based on the audio you heard. There may be more than one correct answer!
This statement is true. We know that Harold and Philip have met before today because Philip asks Harold about a past encounter in Tokyo, in which Philip negotiated with Harold Warbuckle's buyers, and apparently ended with a few drinks! Additionally, the informal tone of this conversation suggests that Harold and Philip know each other, and are probably friends.
This statement is false. Although Philip mentions "buyers" in this conversation, it is because he negotiated with buyers (in Tokyo). Philip himself is a salesman, or a person who makes a living by selling goods or services.
This statement is true. Philip Cheeter is a "salesman", or someone who sells products or services professionally. We know this because Harold begins this conversation by asking "How's the best salesman in the world?". Although Philip never officially gives his title in this dialogue, he is the Delavigne Corporation's director of sales.
Not quite. Philip is not a lawyer, though he is involved in a surprising number of lawsuits.

According to what Frederick F. Fielding says at the end of the dialogue, Brian might be needing:
This is not correct. If Frederick F. Fielding gets violent, Brian might need a policeman to protect him. However there is no indication of this in the dialogue!
This is correct. At the end of the scene, the man who is kidnapped by mistake, Frederick F. Fielding, says "I'm going to sue you for everything you've got!". "To sue" means to start a law case against someone usually in order to receive financial compensation. "Lawyers" represent clients in court, as well as providing them with legal advice. If Frederick F. Fielding decides to start legal proceedings, Brian will probably need a lawyer to represent him.
This is incorrect. If Frederick F. Fielding gets violent, Brian might need a doctor. However there is no indication of this in the dialogue!
This is incorrect. A singer is someone who uses their voice to produce songs and melodies. This might help Brian feel better if things turn nasty, however there is no mention of a singer in the dialogue!
Exercise 4
Select the TRUE statement(s) from the list below, according to the text of the advertisement.

There may be more than 1!

Select the TRUE statement(s) from the list below, according to the text of the advertisement.

There may be more than 1!
This is incorrect. GoldenWheelchair.com provides compensation for people who have had accidents, there is no indication that the company prevents people from having accidents. "To prevent (somebody) from (doing something)" is "to stop or block" them from doing it. Example: Donna prevented the man from jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge.
This is a true statement. The advertisement states that customers who have had accidents "will be contacted by a claims specialist who will provide legal advice." A "claims specialist" describes someone who is qualified and has experience talking about accident compensation. "Legal advice" refers to "judicial counsel": giving expert opinion relating to the law.
This is incorrect. The advertisement does not state that doctors will be provided to GoldenWheelchair customers, instead it states that "a personal injury lawyer" will "handle your claim". A "personal injury lawyer" is a representative of the law who specialises in accidents and injuries to individuals.
This is incorrect. GoldenWheelchair doesn't charge for its services. "To charge (money)" is "to ask for payment". Example: "I was charged 200 euros for the haircut." The advertisement states that "you never pay a dime" for the GoldenWheelchair service. A "dime" is a coin which has the value of ten American cents. In American currency, there are 10 "dimes", 20 "nickles", 100 "pennies", or 4 "quarters" in a dollar.
Exercise 5
According to Susie's description of Delavigne's "target market" for TigerLily, which of the following people would be most likely to purchase a bottle of the perfume?

According to Susie's description of Delavigne's "target market" for TigerLily, which of the following people would be most likely to purchase a bottle of the perfume?
Because Melanie is a "high-school graduate", she is too young to be part of the target age described by Susie. Also because Melanie has a "longtime boyfriend", she doesn't fit into the category of "divorced, love-starved" women.
Because Sarah is a "senior citizen", which means she is over the age of 65, she does not fit the description given by Susie.
This is the best choice here. Susie says that Delavigne is targeting "divorced women, aged 29-55". Amanda fits these criteria better than any of the other choices.
Because Susie says that the product is targeting "women", John is not the best choice here.
