"LOL" is often capitalized when the user thinks something is VERY funny, although I'm not sure how many people are actually laughing out loud when they write "LOL"! Note that this type of Internet slang is somewhat controversial in English-speaking countries, although it is frequently used, particularly by younger Internet users.
