A "nest egg" is usually a sum of money held in reserve and is synonymous with "savings". Example: Every month I put money towards a nest-egg so that I can retire at 50. In this context "to work out" means to develop in a good or specified way, for example: Bob's new computer program didn't work out, and it crashed the whole server.

This is incorrect. Hannah is not saying that if she loses her job and flat that she can stay with her family. A "nest egg" is not synonymous with a "nest" which is a little home where birds sleep.
