Exercise 1
Jean says that he got his English courses with his "promotion".

In this context, what is a promotion?

Jean says that he got his English courses with his "promotion".

In this context, what is a promotion?
Although as a verb, "to promote" can mean "to advertise" or "to publicize" a product, in this case "promotion" is being used in the sense of a job.
This is the correct choice. A "promotion" is a raise or advance in salary or position for an employee.
This is simply incorrect. Perhaps Jean drives to his English lessons in a car, but it is not the car that enables him to take English lessons.
Although a "promotion" can be a discount or special deal, in this case it doesn't make sense that Jean is able to take English lessons because of a discount.

Luna tells Philip that he will not be "promoted, dismissed or transferred". Define these terms!

To be "promoted" is to be: given a higher position 1
To be "dismissed" means to be: fired 2
To be "transferred" is to be: relocated 3
1 given a higher position: This is the right answer. To be "promoted" is to be offered a better job, or a higher position within a company. Example: "I've just been promoted to the position of regional manager! Let's get a bottle of champagne!".
1 relocated: If someone is "relocated", they are "transferred": for example, they are moved to a different department or a different office. This is not the right answer here.
1 fired: To be "dismissed" is to be "fired" or "given the sack": it is what happens when you lose your job. This is very different from being "promoted"!
2 fired: This is the best choice here. To be "dismissed" is to be "fired" or "given the sack": it is what happens when you lose your job. Example: "I was dismissed from my job in the bank because I'm a kleptomaniac".
2 relocated: If someone is "relocated", they are "transferred": for example, they are moved to a different department or a different office. This is not the right answer here.
2 given a higher position: To be offered a higher position within a company is to be "promoted". This is very different from being "dismissed"!
3 relocated: This is the right choice. If someone is "transferred", they are "relocated": for example, they are moved to a different department or a different office. Another example: "I've asked my boss if I could be transferred to our Paris office: I've always dreamed of living in France".
3 given a higher position: To be offered a higher position within a company is to be "promoted". This is not the best choice here.
3 fired: To be "fired" is to be "dismissed" or to "lose one's job". This is not the best choice here.

To lower in rank or status, to be given a less important job = to be demoted 2.
1 promoted: Bruno says that Jean "can be promoted to manager after all". To be "promoted" is to be offered a better job, or a higher position within a company. Example: I was promoted from Cleaning Assistant to Chief Toilet Deblocker.
2 demoted: To "demote" is the opposite of to "promote": to reduce in grade, status or rank. Example: The Army captain was demoted to lieutenant after he refused to give the order to shoot.
Exercise 4
According to the dialogue, which of the following statements is TRUE?

According to the dialogue, which of the following statements is TRUE?
This is the only statement which is true. Bruno says "I suggest you double and triple check all of your research". This means that Bruno wants Philip to prepare a complete, exhaustive report by next week. To "double check (something)" means to check something "twice" or again, often to assure accuracy, for example: I double checked my pockets to see if I had put my cars keys there.
This statement is not true. Philip says: "We're bringing money to these poorer nations. We're practically saving them from starvation". He is exaggerating when he says this, but there is no evidence that Delavigne encourages or "promotes" starvation in poor countries.
This statement is not true. Susie talks about a "possible public scandal, which will cost you much more than your precious profits". This means that a "public scandal" would potentially cost Delavigne a large amount of money, but when she says "much more than your profits", she is implying that a scandal would hurt their "reputation".
This statement is not true. Bruno says that he does not like Philip's argument, but they "may have to seriously reconsider Philip's suggestions". Whether or not Bruno "likes" Philip's suggestions, he will "consider" them, or "think them over".

This word describes somebody who cannot hear, like Beethoven or Helen Keller. Donna's cat also fits this description. "You can insult her as much as you like, she is totally deaf 1."

This term refers to an increase in salary. "I received a promotion last week for my hard work, as well as a pay-rise 2."
1 deaf: This is the correct choice. A person who cannot hear, whether from birth or due to illness later on in life is said to be "deaf". In the dialogue, Donna talks about her cat being "the only person who ever listens" to her and then reveals that her cat is "deaf", so cannot hear her.
2 pay-rise: In the dialogue, Donna advises Icarus to "ask for a pay-rise" as an exercise to increase his assertiveness. A "pay-rise" is an increase in your weekly, monthly, or yearly salary.
