Definition

the shade: the shadow, the coolness; the hue, the color, the tint noun

Examples

shade: The "shade (of a tree)" is an area which is protected from direct sunlight, for example: Cats always sit in the shade when it is very hot and sunny. A shade can also describe a small variation in a colour or quality, for example: I don't think the logo should be that shade of pink. Note that a "shadow" is the dark shape when a light shines on a person or object.

shade: "Shade" is the right answer. In the dialogue, Philip says that Esmeralda is wearing "a beautiful shade of lipstick", meaning that he likes the colour of her lip makeup. Note that, in another context, "the shade" can refer to an area which is not in the sun. Example: "It's going to be 35° tomorrow, so you should stay in the shade if you don't want to burn".
