How many stalls are there in the bathroom? How many compartments are there?

to stall (someone): to delay (someone), to make (someone) wait
They are stalling on the deal. They are delaying their decision about the deal.

to stall (a car): to accidentally cause (a car) to stop

to stall (a plane): to cause (a plane) to lose power and drop or lose altitude
Note that there is also a related noun: "a stall", which in aeronautical terms is a reduction in the lift of an aircraft.
