Use of di
We mainly use di for the following purposes:
- To indicate origin with the verb essere (to be):
Magda è di Roma.
Magda is from Rome.
- In response to the questions chi? (who?) or che cosa? (what?) before a verb in its infinitive (standard) form:
Mi sono dimenticata di spegnere la tv.
I forgot to turn off the TV.
- To indicate possession:
Questa è la casa di Ruggero.
This is Ruggero's house (literally, “this is the house of Ruggero”).
- To indicate the material something is made of:
Questo tavolo è di plastica.
This table is made of plastic.
- To indicate a subject:
Oggi parleremo di scienze naturali.
Today we will talk about natural sciences.
- To indicate a way of doing something:
Betty era sempre di corsa.
Betty was always in a hurry.
- To indicate times of day:
Andiamo sempre a correre di mattina.
We always go running in the morning.
