Indefinite articles (a, an)

The indefinite articles – un (a, an), une (a, an) and des (some) – are chosen according to the noun that comes after them.

Note: in the negative form, we replace un/une/des by de (or d’).

I have a car → I don't have a car.

I have some friends → I don't have any friends.

1 une :

Elle veut une voiture (She wants a car) articles indéfinis. Example: une idée, une bouteille, une piscine (an idea, a bottle, a swimming pool)…

1 un :

Un is masculine, whereas voiture is feminine. Example: Je veux un verre de vin (I want a glass of wine).

1 des :

Des is plural, but la voiture is singular. Example: Il achète des fruits (He's buying fruit).

2 des :

Nous faisons des pizzas (We're making pizzas). Des is the plural of un and une. Example: Il y a des fleurs et des arbres dans le jardin (There are flowers and trees in the garden).

2 un :

We use un in the masculine, not in the plural as here (pizzas). Example: Elle écoute un disque (She's listening to a record).

2 une :

Une is feminine singular, but pizzas is plural. Example: J’ai une bicyclette (I have a bicycle).

3 un :

Ils ont un chien (They have a dog). We use un with masculine singular nouns. Example: J’ai vu un film (I watched a movie).

3 des :

Des chiens (dogs) is plural, but our sentence is referring to the singular un chien.

3 une :

We use une with feminine nouns, but chien is masculine. Example: Je vois une lumière (I see a light).

1 un :

Ils veulent un café (They want a coffee) articles indéfinis. Example: Elle fait un gâteau (She's making a cake).

2 des :

Elle raconte des histoires (She tells stories). We use des with plural nouns like histoires. Example: Je veux des croissants et des tartines (I want croissants and open sandwiches).

3 une :

Il prépare une tarte (He's making a pie). We use une with feminine singular nouns. Example: Ils achètent une table (They're buying a table).
