Indefinite articles (a)
The three types of indefinite articles un, une, des (= 'a, an, some') depend on the gender and number of the noun that follows.

| ♂ | UN | un garçon, un vélo a boy, a bicycle |
| ♀ | UNE | une voiture a car |
| ♂♂♀♀ | DES | des enfants, des chaises (some) children, (some) chairs |
Note: In the negative form, we replace un, une, des by de (or d’).
J’ai une voiture → Je n’ai pas de voiture. I have a car → I don't have a car.
J’ai des amis → Je n’ai pas d’amis. I have some friends → I don't have any friends.
J’ai des amis → Je n’ai pas d’amis. I have some friends → I don't have any friends.
