What's the weather like?

To ask for information about the weather, you can say:

What is/What's the weather like? 

How is/How's the weather?

To answer these questions and give information about the weather, use these structures:

  • To describe the weather in general: it is To be, present simple tense + adjective (sunny, cold, warm, etc.) 

It is sunny today.

  •  To describe how the weather is at the time of speaking: it is + -ing form (raining, snowing, hailing, etc.)

It is raining.

Note: when you talk about the weather, you can often create adjectives with the structure noun + y.

the wind → It is windy.

the rain → It is rainy.

1 is:

-What's the weather like? -It is rainy. Use the structure it is To be, present simple tense + adjective (here, rainy) to describe the weather in general. Examples: it is cold; it is foggy.

1 has:

Use the verb to have (here, has To have, present simple tense) to express possession, but not to describe the weather. Example: he has a large apartment.

1 likes:

You can use like in a question to ask for information about the weather, as in What's the weather like? , but not to give information about it.

2 How:

-How's the weather? -It is snowing. This is a common way to ask for information about the weather. Example: -How's the weather in Dover today? -It is cold and rainy.

2 What:

You can use what when you say What's the weather like?, but in this sentence like is missing.

2 Does:

You could ask a question about the weather such as Does it snow a lot in winter?, but that's not what we ask when the answer is It is snowing.

3 It is:

-What's the weather like in London? -It is cold. Use it is To be, present simple tense + adjective (here, cold) to describe the weather in general. Example: -What's the weather like in Rome? -It is sunny and hot.

3 Is it:

You could use is it in a question, as in Is it cold today?, but in answers we place the subject (here, it) before the verb (here, is).

3 He is:

Use he is to refer to a male subject, not to the weather. Example: he is such a nice man.

3 sunny:

It is warm and sunny! Use it is + one or more adjectives (such as warm and sunny) to describe the weather in general. Example: it is cold and cloudy.
