Dopo (after, next, then)

Dopo means “after”, “next", “then”, and is generally used alone in the following circumstances:

  • when followed by a noun or the past participle of a verb.

Parla dopo aver finito di mangiare.

Talk once you have finished eating.

Dopo il lavoro, vado in palestra.

After work, I'm going to the gym.

  • at the end of a sentence to mean “later”.

Ci sentiamo dopo. (= più tardi)

Speak to you later.

La chiamerai dopo. (= più tardi)

You'll call her later.

You might see one of the following after dopo in certain cases:

  • di + personal pronoun Pronomi preposizioni

Entro dopo di te.

I'll come in after you.

Nella fila, ci sei tu dopo di me.

You are after me in the line.

  • che (that) + verb in its indicative form

Dopo che sono uscito, ha iniziato a piovere. (= Dopo essere uscito)

After I went out, it started to rain.

Dopo che ti ho visto, mi sono sentita più tranquilla. (= Dopo averti visto)

After I saw you, I felt more relaxed.
