The verbs tenere, rimanere and venire in the present tense

The verbs tenere (to hold, to keep), rimanere (to stay, to remain) and venire (to come) are irregular and are formed as follows in the present tense:

Lui/lei tiene
Noi teniamo
Voi tenete
Loro tengono
Rimanere
Io rimango
Tu rimani
Lui/lei rimane
Noi rimaniamo
Voi rimanete
Loro rimangono
Venire
Io vengo
Tu vieni
Lui/lei viene
Noi veniamo
Voi venite
Loro vengono

Tiene sempre del formaggio fresco in frigo.

She always keeps fresh cheese in the refrigerator.

Vieni con me all’opera? Ti tengo il posto se vuoi.

Are you coming to the opera with me? I'll keep you a seat if you like.

Rimango sempre stupita quando lo guardo. 

I'm always amazed when I look at it (literally, “I always remain amazed when I look at it”).

Note: derivatives of these verbs, such as contenere (to contain), trattenere (to withhold), mantenere (to maintain, to keep), convenire (to be convenient, to suit, to be worthwhile), avvenire (to happen), divenire (to become), etc., also follow the same pattern.

La scatola contiene i cereali.

The box contains cereal.

Conviene comprare una nuova auto.

It's worthwhile buying a new car.
