Expressing your opinion

To express your opinion, you can use:

  • the verbs glauben (to believe, to think), denken (to think), finden (to find), sicher sein (to be sure), bezweifeln (to doubt), etc. with dass (that);

Ich glaube, dass es morgen regnen wird.

I believe that it will rain tomorrow.

Ich finde, dass das Bild schön ist.

I think that the picture is beautiful.

Alle denken, dass es zu viele Katzen im Brandenbutt Hotel gibt.

Everybody thinks that there are too many cats in the Brandenbutt Hotel.

Er bezweifelt, dass die Gäste ihr Zimmer bezahlt haben.

He doubts that the guests have paid for their room.

  • the phrases meiner Meinung nach or meines Erachtens (both meaning “in my opinion”);

Meiner Meinung nach sollte das Hotel renoviert werden.

In my opinion the hotel should be renovated.

Das Hotelpersonal ist meines Erachtens sehr freundlich.

In my opinion (formal) the hotel staff are very friendly.

  • the verb sein sein, Präsens + die Meinung (the opinion) or die Ansicht (the view) in the genitive case Gen.-Endungen + dass (that).

Wir sind der Meinung, dass Berlin schön ist.

We are of the opinion that Berlin is beautiful.

Ich bin der Ansicht, dass das Buch interessant ist.

My view is that the book is interesting.

Note: to report someone else's opinion in indirect speech you use the Konjunktiv I (subjunctive I).

Caroline sagt, sie bezweifle, dass vegetarische Gerichte sich gut verkaufen. bezweifeln, Konj. I Präsens

Caroline says she doubts that vegetarian dishes will sell well.
