Leicht or einfach?

Einfach means “easy”, and its opposite is schwierig (difficult).

Der Test war einfach.

The test was easy.

Italienisch lernen finde ich einfach.

I find learning Italian easy.

Es ist einfach, Ratschläge zu geben.

It is easy to give advice.

Leicht (light) is the opposite of schwer (heavy). It is used in the following contexts:

  • Weight

Die Tasche ist leicht.

The bag is light.

  • Extent, scope, lack of strength

Es gab ein leichtes Unwetter.

There was a light thunderstorm.

Er ist leicht verletzt.

He is slightly injured.

  • Set phrases

Es fällt mir leicht, neue Freunde zu finden.

It's easy for me to make new friends.

Heute bestelle ich ein leichtes Mittagessen.

Today I am ordering a light lunch.

Note: in the following kinds of context, leicht (light) is used colloquially instead of einfach (easy), even though this is technically incorrect.

Er ist einfach zu verstehen. → Er ist leicht zu verstehen.

He is easy to understand.

Die Prüfung war einfach. → Die Prüfung war leicht.

The exam was easy.
