The prepositions gegen (against), um (around), für (for), ohne (without) and durch (through) always take the accusative. Akkusativ

Wir fahren um den See. Bestimmter Artikel

We are driving around the lake.

Der Wein ist für dich. Personalpronomen

The wine is for you.

Ohne mein Kissen kann ich nicht schlafen. Possessivartikel Akkusativ

I can't sleep without my cushion.

Notes

  • The only article (the/a) that changes its form in the accusative is the masculine singular one: der den, ein einen.

Ein Tunnel durch den Kanal. (der Kanal)

A tunnel through the channel.

  • Für (for), durch (through) and um (around) can be merged with the neuter article das (the) fürs, durchs, ums.
