I understand (that you enjoy golfing): I believe, I have been told (that you enjoy playing golf)

Besides its main meaning ('to comprehend'), I understand... also means 'I have heard, I have been informed, I believe':

I understand that you are looking to buy a new house. I have heard that you want to buy a new house.

an understanding: an agreement, a deal; a belief, an impression
