Welcome to the world of prepositions!

The expression bienvenue ! (Welcome!) is used to greet or welcome someone after their arrival. Unlike in English where only 'to' is used, the French term can also be followed by several different prepositions depending on the context:

• Bienvenue à :

Bienvenue à mon anniversaire et à ma soirée. (bienvenue à + événement.) Welcome to my birthday and to my party. Welcoming someone to an event (using the preposition à)
Bienvenue à toi, à ta famille et à tes amis. (bienvenue à + personne qui arrive) Welcome to you, to your family, to your friends. Welcoming someone specific (with à)
Bienvenue à Paris, à Ouagadougou, à Montréal. (bienvenue à + nom de ville) Welcome to Paris, Ouagadougou, Montreal. Welcoming someone to a city or town (with à)

• Bienvenue en/au + nom de pays. Welcoming someone to a country.

Bienvenue au Canada, au Mexique. (On dit le Canada, le Mexique) Welcome to Canada, Mexico. (We say le Canada, le Mexique).
Bienvenue en France, en Grèce. (On dit la France, la Grèce) Welcome to France, welcome to Greece. (we say La France, la Grèce).

Bienvenue chez + personne qui reçoit Welcoming someone to your home or establishment, or someone else's (with chez):

Bienvenue chez moi, chez ma tante, chez mes parents. (bienvenue chez + personne qui reçoit) Welcome to my place, to my aunt's (place), to my parent's (place).

• Welcome to:
Bienvenue sur Terre, bienvenue sur la lune, bienvenue sur mon site Internet. (Welcome to Earth, Welcome to the moon, Welcome to my website).
Bienvenue dans + lieu dans lequel on est entré. Welcoming or introducing someone to a new space, community (with dans):
