Indefinite articles come before an unspecified person or thing:

| ♀ | una | unas | una amiga, unas casas a female friend, houses |
| ♂ | un | unos | un perro, unos abrigos a dog, coats |
Note: una changes to un in front of a feminine noun with an initial stressed syllable that begins with the letters a or ha:
Un arma pesada, un hacha afilada.
