The imperative of the verbs reír and freír

In the imperative of reír (to laugh) and freír (to fry), the e in the root changes to an i. These are the conjugations:

Reír en
(tú) ríe
(usted) ría
(nosotros/as) riamos
(vosotros/as) reíd
(ustedes) rían
Freír
(tú) fríe
(usted) fría
(nosotros/as) friamos
(vosotros/as) freíd
(ustedes) frían

¡Ríe! Te van a hacer una foto.

Smile! They're going to take your picture.

Fríe las verduras a fuego lento.

Fry the vegetables over low heat.

Notes

  • These verbs are irregular with the pronoun vosotros/as (informal, plural “you”).

Reíd, que vamos a la playa.

Smile, we're going to the beach.

  • The verbs that are derived from reír (like sonreír, “to smile”) and freír (like sofreír, “to sauté”) follow the same conjugation.

Sonría, por favor.

Smile, please.

Para la receta, sofríe las verduras.

To follow the recipe, sauté the vegetables.
