Ab or seit?

Ab (from) indicates the starting point for a period of time in the present or future:

Wir haben ab 9 Uhr geöffnet.

We are open from 9 a.m.

Ab nächster Woche fahre ich mit dem Zug zur Arbeit.

From next week, I'll be taking the train to work.

Ab heute wird es kälter.

It's getting colder from today onwards.

Seit (since, for) indicates a period of time that lasts from the past to the present:

Sigi arbeitet seit 2000 in dem Hotel.

Sigi has worked at the hotel since 2000.

Seit einem Monat ist Anna die Chefin.

Anna has been the boss for a month.

Seit seiner Hochzeit ist er unglücklich.

He has been unhappy since his wedding.

Note: ab and seit take the dative. Dativ

Ab nächstem Monat verdiene ich mehr.

I will earn more from next month.

Seit einem Monat arbeite ich im Hotel.

I've been working at the hotel for a month.
