Abbreviations of prepositions and articles

You can combine the prepositions an (to), auf (on), bei (with, at), in (in) , für (for), von (from), vor (in front of) and zu (to) with a definite article (das, dem, der - "the") to form a new word.

Accusative Akk.-Endungen

  • auf + das = aufs (on the)

Magda legt sich aufs Bett.

Magda lies down on the bed.

  • an + das = ans (to the)

Caroline bringt das Frühstück ans Bett.

Caroline brings the breakfast to the bed.

  • in + das = ins (to/into the)

Dr. Meyer fährt ins Krankenhaus.

Dr. Meyer drives to the hospital.

Dative Dat.-Endungen

  • in + dem = im (in the)

Sigi schwimmt im Pool.

Sigi swims in the pool.

  • an + dem = am (at the)

Ich bin am Bahnhof.

I am at the station.

  • bei + dem = beim (at the)

Beim Bäcker gibt es Brot.

At the baker’s there is bread.

  • von + dem = vom (from the)

Das Hotel ist nicht weit vom Bahnhof entfernt.

The hotel is not far from the station.

  • zu + dem = zum (to the)

Tim geht zum Supermarkt.

Tim goes to the supermarket.

  • zu + der = zur (to the)

Alle gehen zur Beerdigung.

Everybody goes to the funeral.
