Asking questions
There are two ways to ask a question:
- For yes/no questions, the word order is: conjugated verb + subject:
-Haben wir noch Kaffee? -Nein, wir haben keinen Kaffee mehr.
-Do we have any more coffee? -No, we don’t have any more coffee.
-Wollen wir ins Kino gehen? -Ja, gerne. (Modalverben: Infinitiv am Satzende)
-Shall we go to the cinema? -Yes, let’s go. (Modal verbs: infinitive at the end of the sentence)
-Ruft Magda bei Dr. Meyer an? -Nein, sie ruft nicht an. (trennbare Verben: Präfix am Satzende)
-Is Magda calling Dr. Meyer? -No, she is not calling him. (Separable verbs: prefix at the end of the sentence)
- For questions with a question word, the word order is: Question word + conjugated verb + subject:
- Warum will Anna das Hotel verkaufen? -Weil sie nicht im Hotel arbeiten möchte.
-Why does Anna want to sell the hotel? -Because she does not want to work in the hotel.
- Wer fährt nach Berlin? -Anna fährt nach Berlin.
-Who is travelling to Berlin? -Anna is travelling to Berlin.
