Adjective agreement: general rules

In French, adjectives must agree with (masculine, feminine, singular and plural) nouns.

In general, we add an e to the feminine form of the adjective, an s to the masculine plural, and an es to the feminine plural:


grand
méchant

Un joli chat, une jolie fleur, des jolis arbres, des jolies plantes. A pretty cat, a pretty flower, pretty trees, pretty plants.
After the verb être, the adjective must agree with the related subject.
Cette histoire est intéressante, ces histoires sont intéressantes This story is interesting, these stories are interesting.
Il est désolé, elle est désolée He is sorry, she is sorry.
