Adjective agreement: special cases

Note: In French, adjectives must agree with (masculine, feminine, singular and plural) nouns. In general, we add an e to the feminine form.

When this isn't the case, there are a number of rules which determine the spelling of the feminine form when the ending of masculine form is spelled in a certain way.

Un homme menteur → Une femme menteuse
A male liar → a female liar
Un père conservateur → Une mère conservatrice
A conservative father → a conservative mother
Thierry est peureux → Jeanine est peureuse
Thierry is cowardly → Jeanine is cowardly
Un garçon sportif → Une fille sportive
A sporty boy → a sporty girl
Un pantalon neuf → une chemise neuve
New trousers → a new shirt
Un lieu public → une affaire publique
A public place → a public affair
Un manteau blanc→ une robe blanche
A white coat → a white dress
-double consonne + e
Un air brésilien → une chanson brésilienne
A Brazilian tune → A Brazilian song
Un bon gâteau → une bonne glace
A good cake → a good ice cream
Un gros poisson → une grosse araignée
A big fish → a big spider
