Definite articles
Definite articles come before a specific object or an identifiable person:
Singular | Plural | ||

♀ | La | Las | La niña, las doctoras the girl, the (female) doctors |
♂ | El | Los | El niño, los profesores the boy, the (male) teachers |
Notes: La changes to el in front of a feminine noun that begins with the letter a- or a stressed ha-:
El agua está fría.
The water is cold.
El hambre era tremenda.
The hunger was terrible.
