The various uses of the verb dejar: deja de comer, deja que te hable, deja la ventana abierta.

The verb dejar can take on various meanings depending on the structure of the sentence.

Ana dejó de comer carne a los 16 años.

Ana stopped eating meat when she was 16.

Deja que te ayude con la maleta.

Let me help you with the suitcase.

Dejen salir antes de entrar. 

Let people out before going in.

  • Dejar as a conjugated verb + noun means “to leave”.

Deja el libro encima de la mesa.

Leave the book on the table.

  • Dejar as a conjugated verb + infinitive means “to let” or “to allow”. We can also use it in negative sentences to say something is “not allowed”:

En el hotel dejan entrar perros.

They let dogs come into the hotel.

A partir de las 21h no dejan entrar en la piscina.

They don't allow anyone to go into the pool after 9 p.m.

  • Dejar as a conjugated verb + que + noun/conjugated verb means “to let”. We can use it in negative sentences, when someone “doesn't let” something happen.

Ana deja que Magda la invite a una caña.

Ana lets Magda buy her a beer.

Ana no deja que Magda la invite a una caña.

Ana doesn't let Magda buy her a beer.

  • Dejar as a conjugated verb + de + infinitive means “to stop” or "to quit" doing something.

Rodrigo dejó de fumar hace dos años.

Rodrigo quit smoking two years ago.
