I'm sorry! Expressing regret

The two easiest ways of expressing regret are as follows: Mi (di)spiace (I'm sorry) dispiacersi, presente / Scusami / Mi scusi (excuse me), with the imperative of scusare scusarsi, imperativo presente and the pronoun mi, which is attached to the end of the tu (informal “you”) form of the verb, and comes before the lei (formal “you”) form of the verb.

Mi sono sbagliato, mi (di)spiace.

I made a mistake, I'm sorry.

Mi scusi, sono arrivato tardi.

Excuse me, I've arrived late.

These are the other ways:

  • Pentirsi, rimpiangere (to regret)

I regret not having made that trip.

He regrets his former life.

  • Using the condizionale passato (past conditional)

Avrei dovuto dovere, condizionale passato invitare Ciro. (= mi pento di non aver invitato Ciro)

I should have invited Ciro.

  • Using the se (if) + imperfect subjunctive + conditional structure

If I were to go back (in time), I would not do it again.

  • Using the expression Che peccato! (What a shame!)

Ciro can't come? What a shame!

What a shame that Ciro didn't come!
