The verbs rompere (to break), distruggere (to destroy) and leggere (to read) have irregular but similar past participles ending in -tto.

  • Rompere: rotto (broken)
  • Distruggere: distrutto (destroyed)
  • Leggere: letto (read)

These irregular past participles follow the same rules as regular past participles.

Who has broken/who broke the porcelain vase?

Tutte le statue sono state distrutte dal terremoto.

All the statues were destroyed by the earthquake.

Mario ha letto tutto il libro in due ore.

Mario read the whole book in two hours.
