Ein or eins?

We use ein before a noun:

Da steht ein Baum. 

There is a tree.

Ein Taxi wartet auf ihn.

A taxi is waiting on him.

Ich möchte ein Kilo Äpfel.

I would like a kilo of apples.

Sie haben ein Kind.

They have a child.

We use eins without a noun:

  • as the number “one”

Die Vorwahl ist: null, zwei, eins, drei.

The area code is zero, two, one, three.

  • as the relative pronoun for a neuter noun

Ich nehme ein Bier. Möchtest du auch eins? (das Bier)

I'll have a beer. Would you like one too?

-Ich möchte ein Tattoo. -Ich habe auch eins. (das Tattoo)

-I'd like a tattoo. -I've got one too.
